What is the NCPE?

The NCPE (National Commission for the Promotion of Equality) is the autonomous body set up by means of Act I of 2003, which provides specialized expertise, support and assistance in matters of equality between men and women, both to individuals and to organizations.

When does Gender Discrimination occur?

Gender Discrimination can occur when persons are treated less favourably because of their sex, or because they are married, or because they are pregnant or can become pregnant, or because they have care responsibilities. Discrimination can be direct and indirect, and includes situations which are not outright discriminatory but are discriminatory in their effect. Discrimination is unlawful.

What is sexual harassment?

Sexual harassment is unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature, and is a form of discrimination.

What should I do if I experience discrimination and harassment?

You should contact the NCPE for free advice and assistance. Alternatively you can contact the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations or your trade union.

Do I have a right to work on reduced hours?

The entitlement to work on reduced hours depends on whether such a clause in included in the relative collective agreement, if any, since otherwise employers have no obligation to grant requests to work on reduced hours.

What is my maternity leave entitlement?

Maternity leave entitlement is of fourteen weeks, of which thirteen are paid.

What is parental leave?

Parental leave is unpaid leave of up to three months which can be granted to both mothers and fathers on the birth, adoption or legal custody of a child, to enable them to take care of that child for a period of three months until the child has attained the age of eight years.
